The Opening Discussion: Is Consumption Necessary?

According to experts, our current degree of consumption has exceeded the planet’s sustainable limits. We buy and consume more than is sustainable over the long term and we cannot continue this trend indefinitely. Some exceeded limits are already giving us alarming feedback, for example in the form of the ongoing climate crisis, the exhaustion of the countryside due to intensive farming methods and the ubiquity of micro-plastics. The transition to more sustainable consumption is therefore unavoidable. However, there is no one simple manual. What options are available? What kind of transformation should consumption undergo in the near future? And what are the social, economic and political limits and opportunities presented by these changes? These are but a few of the topics that will be covered in the festival’s opening debate.
